# Virtuus

> Virtuus is the Anthus structured-data layer: a filesystem-native virtual table engine for JSON records with just-in-time indexing and fast query access after load.

## What it is

Virtuus represents a recurring Anthus design choice: keep the source of truth simple, visible, and portable. It treats directories of JSON files as indexed tables, which makes structured data queryable in environments where a heavyweight always-on database is the wrong fit.

## What it does

- Represents records as per-file JSON while preserving table-like query semantics.
- Supports primary keys, secondary indexes, associations, search, and pagination.
- Optimizes for cold-start-friendly workloads where data is loaded once and queried often.
- Provides Python and Rust implementations around the same behavioral model.

## Why it matters

Not every agent workload wants a remote database. Some need to run in isolated, resumable, or regulated environments where the filesystem is the practical durable substrate. Virtuus exists for that class of problem.

## How it fits the Anthus Platform

Virtuus is a foundational infrastructure component. [Caducus](/platform/caducus) already uses it for event storage. [Tactus](/platform/tactus) procedures and other isolated workers can use it when they need fast local queries without depending on a central service. It makes the rest of the platform more portable.

A common pattern is [Virtuus](/platform/virtuus) + [Tactus](/platform/tactus) + [Caducus](/platform/caducus): keep structured state local, make the worker portable, and retain enough query power for analysis and triage.
